Working Sobriety Chicago is a group of addiction treatment professionals, all of whom have experience with recovery from addiction and compulsive behaviors.

Kimberly D. Dennis, M.D. is a psychiatrist who graduated from the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine and did her residency training in psychiatry at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she served as Chief Resident. In addition to her role at Working Sobriety Chicago, Dr. Dennis is the Medical Director of Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center. She maintains a holistic perspective, incorporating biological, psycho-social and spiritual approaches to support her patients in engaging in the process of recovery. She provides individual and group psychotherapy with medication management for adolescents and adults. Her areas of expertise include the treatment of eating disorders, alcoholism and other addictive disorders, dual diagnosis and family members of alcoholics and addicts.  Dr. Dennis is published in the area of gender differences in the development of psychopathology and on the use of medication with family-based therapy for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. She is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the Academy for Eating Disorders, the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry and the American Society for Addiction Medicine.

Jeffrey D. Roth, M.D. is an addictions psychiatrist and group psychotherapist. He graduated from Yale University Medical School and did his residency in psychiatry at the University of Chicago. He is board certified in psychiatry and in the sub-specialty of addictions psychiatry, and is certified in addictions medicine by the American Society of Addictions Medicine (ASAM). He is the past-president of the Chicago Center for the Study of Groups and Organizations, a Fellow of ASAM and a Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association. He is the author of the book Group Psychotherapy and Recovery from Addiction: Carrying the Message and the editor of the Journal of Groups in Addiction and Recovery.

Tamara Roth, MS, CADC a certified addictions counselor. She specializes in individual, couples and family therapy.  She also works extensively with recovering opiate addicts using buprenorphine (Suboxone).  She is fluent in Russian. Her past experience as a systems analyst for a major corporation adds to her sophistication and understanding of addiction in the workplace and the family.  Tamara is a member of NAADAC (the association for addiction professionals), the American Group Psychotherapy Association and the Chicago Center for the Study of Groups and Organizations. 

Barney Straus, LCSW, CGP, PCGC is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, specializing   in working with people recovering from behavioral addictions such as addictions to the Internet, gambling, pornography, and shopping. He enjoys working with individuals, groups, and families. He is a certified group psychotherapist by the American Group Psychotherapy Association and a certified problem and compulsive gambling counselor.  Barney is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago School of Social Work and serves as an adjunct faculty member teaching group psychotherapy there, as well as at Roosevelt University.  He  is a member of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, the Illinois Group Psychotherapy Association, the Illinois Counsel on Problem Gambling, and the Illinois Association of Student Assistance Professionals.  Barney sees clients in Evanston as well as at the main Working Sobriety Chicago office.  

Thomas Tharail, LCSW, BCD has been working with individuals, couples, families and groups for over 15 years.  Additionally he is an adjunct faculty member in Loyola University’s graduate program of clinical social work. He has extensive experience working both with individuals in different stages of addiction, as well as the family members or partners who are affected by their choices.

Jim Tifft, CADC is a certified alcohol and drug addiction counselor. Jim has been counseling individuals, families, groups and adolescents since 1987. He is a member of the A.K. Rice Institute and has advanced his learning about groups and organizations using the Tavistock model. Jim has extensive training and experience in both music and acting. His experience in the arts brings an awareness and appreciation of the creative process to recovery from addictions.
